Root, inversions and voicing chords
This is not about the names of chords, or how to figure out which notes chords are made of. It’s how to pick duplications, bottom notes, top notes, spacing of notes, range of notes. At this point we are talking about what to do with a C chord, or any other chord, as e decide how many Cs, how many Es, how many Gs, which letter should go on top, which letter should go on bottom, and where we will leave gaps.
Here are the terms we are concerned with:
- closed versus open, meaning gaps or no gaps
- simple vs not simple, meaning doubling or not doubling
- root vs inversion, about which is on the bottom of the chord
- voicing, what it means
