In modern music the word “mode” simply means using any of the 12 major scales but starting and ending on any note within the scale. For instance, using only the white keys but starting and ending on D becomes mode number 2 of the C scale. There are 7 modes, one for each note in the scale. There are also nearly an infinite number of other scales that are almost like modes but that change a note here and there to make new, very interesting sounds that are frequently used today evoke different moods and atmospheres. I will be uploading various pieces or songs I have written for my students that illustrate some of these moods.
